Beethoven's "Moonlight Sonata"

Original and Romantic Transfiguration

27.06.2003 to 22.02.2004

Beethoven's Piano Sonata in C sharp minor op. 27 No. 2 has ignited the imagination of listeners like no other work. First in literature, then also in the visual arts, this has found expression in many ways. Romantic imagination ranged from the association of a praying woman or a funeral march to a nocturnal moonlit scene over a lake. Even today, everyone knows the sonata under the nickname "Moonlight Sonata", which it only received long after its composition and without Beethoven's approval. Nevertheless, the work and its nickname seem to be inextricably linked for all time.
